Engagement
Writing has never been my strong suit, especially when I feel like it has to purpose in benefiting my life and career goals. I feel like when I am writing about something that interests me, I tend to write more and put more effort into it. For example, Business, Reselling sneakers or Real Estate. Things in that realm peak my interest and I love writing about things like that to broaden my knowledge on managing money and building financial freedom. My theory for writing is if you the writer, like what are writing you’ll get a better grade for that assignment with better quality.
My dislike for writing makes it difficult for me to start because it’s not fun. When I do things I like to be engaged and that includes writing. Being engaged into your writing is very important to me, especially when it’s for an assignment, it can make or break your grade in my opinion. Tying back to my introduction it like writing about business and things in that field. Like I would love to write a How To Book on starting a business. I went to business high school called Manhattan Business Academy located in downtown Manhattan, Chelsea. For my final project we had to basically reflect on our high school career and explain how we have grown. I started reselling sneakers and exclusive items as a freshman in high school because I was too young for a job at the time and always had a talent for selling things and great social skills. Throughout my four years in high school I grew as a Reseller and started to become a household name in my school. In my project I explained how I started off in reselling and how it made me a young entrepreneur. I ended up getting a 99 as my final grade and I was so proud of myself. This is the perfect example because it shows how my love for reselling sneakers pushed me to write and present an amazing project giving me one of the highest grades in my class.
In this English course with Professor Nochomovitz I got to write about my religion (Islam) and how the world views them and just everyday challenges they go through and just how Donald Trump and politicians can form a negative image on Muslims and Islam as a whole. This topic was very important to me because I’m a practicing Muslim and no I’m not perfect but I am trying to be and just be closer with Allah every day. Starting off with the source based essay I was really engaged in the topic because I have personally connections to it and it just really hit hard to home. I utilized CCNY Library to insert evidence into my source based essay. The evidence I used to help me prove my point that Muslims get treated bad because of the image that is painted due to attacks by extremists.
Rhetorical Situations was also an important factor in my writing assignments for this course. I learned how to incorporate audience, author, tone, purpose, genre, medium, stance, and language to make it a stronger piece. This whole course though I was writing about the same topic so it piqued my interests even though I handed assignments in late I still got them done because it was a topic that I liked and could connect to. Peer reviews were also an important part for my growth in writing and they really help me make a good writing piece because I got feedback from other students who are better at writing then I am and enjoy it more than I do. . I had this one peer review that was very effected and it help me really start this Theory Of Writing essay I forgot his name but I want to shout him out for helping me start my TOW writing because I wasn’t really interested in writing this assignment but he really motivated me and showed me how to express my dislike for writing into this piece.(I think his name is Kevin in not really sure but shout out to him). So editing my work and making it better every time made me a stronger writer. Professor Kayle was also a big help even after explaining to her my dislike for writing she would always push me to hand in my work and come in time. She emailed me more than any other Professor and that also gave me courage to write more knowing that she had confidence in me.
In conclusion, being engaged into the topic you are writing about is very important to me. If you don’t like what you are writing about change the topic because nine times out of ten if you like the topic you’ll put more effort into the writing and as a result you’ll get a better grade. My position on writing still hasn’t really changed I still don’t like writing at all but I just want to thank Professor Kayle Nochomovitz for pushing me to write and making me a better writer .
